Junior Cert Course

This is a three year Department of Education course. The Junior Cert runs in a three year A,B,C cycle. This course is available at the Kiltra School of Music on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 8.00 to 9.00pm in accordance with the year you sit the exam.

Those sitting the Junior Cert exams in 2011-Year C Cycle attend Monday evening class
Those sitting the Junior Cert exams in 2012-Year A Cycle attend Wednesday evening class
Those sitting the Junior Cert exams in 2013-Year B Cycle attend Thursday evening class

This course is assessed with a practical examination on an instrument of the students’ choice and a written state examination at the end of the 3 years. The course can be taken at the Kiltra School of Music but the exams will be taken at the students respective secondary schools. Angela will organise this with the pupil and their school principal.

As well as attending the junior cert class each pupil must also be receiving lessons on their chosen instrument and be attending a theory class. This will provide them with all the necessary components and musical aspects that are needed for this course.

Syllabus:

The syllabus is divided into three component parts which represent the three main musical activities, (i)Performing skills, (ii)Composing skills and (iii)Listening skills.

Content of Course:

Written Exam:
Section 1:  Set songs and choice songs. Years A,B,C
Section 2:  Set works and choice works. Years A,B,C
Section 3:  Irish Music
Section 4:  General Historical Music studies
Section 5:  Theory and composition, melody writing, chord progressions.

Practical Exam:
Candidates will be required to present performing skills at either Ordinary or Higher level. Your teacher will help you put an appropriate programme of music together for your practical exam.

Ordinary level candidates will be required to present from one of the categories below. Usually two instrumental/pieces/songs
Higher level candidates will be required to present from one of the categories below at the appropriate level. Usually four instrumental/pieces/songs

Category 1: Solo Song Singing
Category 4: Performing individually on an approved classical instrument
Category 5: Performing on Irish Traditional instruments
Category 6: Improvising on a chosen instrument or voice.

Leaving Cert Course

This is a two year Deparment of Education course ideally candidates will have completed Junior Cert Music. This course is offered on a one to one basis at the Kiltra School of Music. Or alternatively those studying Leaving Cert Music in their own secondary school can enrol for extra grinds at the Kiltra School.
