The following classes are currently running at Kiltra School Of Music, Wexford:

  • Music Theory Classes (pupils take the ABRSM Music Theory Exams)
  • Pre-Instrumental (Early Childhood Music)

Music Theory & Performance  Classes: All those taking exams on their instrument are required to attend a music theory class. In these classes pupils study rhythm, aural tests, performance, sight singing, group singing, they learn to read and write music notation and they will also be prepared to sit the ABRSM theory exams at the end of each year.

Pre-Instrumental 1

These classes are run for children aged 4 and 5 years. These classes are taught on the child-developmental approach of the Kodály Method. The teacher works with the child in a sequential manner, introducing skills in accordance with the capabilities of the child (Choksy 1999:10). New concepts are introduced beginning with what is easiest for the child and progressing to the more difficult (Landis 1972:56). Children are first introduced to musical concepts through experiences such as listening, singing, or movement (Wheeler 1985:12). It is only after the child becomes familiar with a concept that he or she learns how to notate it (Landis 1972:46). Concepts are constantly reviewed and reinforced through games, movement, songs, and exercises (58).

This class also explores many different instruments, ryhthm and percussion, singing that incorporates  play and nursery rhyme singing.

Names are now being taken for enrolment  in September 2011. To enrol for this class please contact Angela at the school.

Pre-Instrumental 2

Due to the large numbers enrolling for the Pre-Instrumental class, we now have a second class for children aged 6 and 7, which is known as Pre-Instrumental 2. In terms of the teaching material, Pre-Instrumental 2 follows on directly from Pre-Instrumental 1. It caters for those children who progressed from Pre-Instrumental 1 who are beginning to learn an instrument at the school and children already learning an instrument who are  progressing towards theory class. However, Pre-Instrumental 2 is equally suitable for those children who are starting at the school and who do not play an instrument.
